After finding a parking spot near the Italian coffee shop where Lucy worked, Kate and Rosebud headed in.
The aroma of freshly baked pizza and the delighted faces on various patrons made Kate turn to Rosebud. âWhat do you think? A pizza to go?â
âI thought youâd never ask, you slave driver!â
âLetâs find Lucy and see if we can have our questions answered and get an order ready to go in time.â
The order ended up being the easiest of both tasks, the chef insisting on Lucy being absolutely essential for the next five minutes. After the detectives showed their badges, Caesar salads appeared. âOn the house,â a short man said as he delivered the plates.
âWe canât accept free food,â Kate explained, âwe just need to talk with Lucy for a few minutes.â
âAh, come on. Itâs not a big deal,â Rosebud said.
âAccepting free food is clearly against our departmentâs policy.â
Heâd already stuffed two forkfuls down his throat. âIn your world. But fine. Weâll leave a generous tip that covers the cost of those salads. How about that?â
âIt blows my mind. How you can navigate through shades of gray like this when the policies are black and white.â
âIt gets easier with time. I promise. Iâve got a solid decade of detective work over you, soââ
âDetectives, you wanted to see me?â Lucy said.
Kate turned away from Rosebud to stare at the woman wearing white from head to toeâexcept for various orange stains on her apron. Her eyes were hollow and heavy, as though she hadnât slept much the previous night.
âI assume this has to do with Jessica. Her dad called me last night. Itâs so horrible what happened to herââ
âLucy!â someone yelled from the kitchen.
âThatâs the chef. I really donât have much time. Weâre understaffed and have lots of orders to fill.â
âWeâll make it quick. I attended the autopsy earlier today. Turns out that Jessica was seeing a special someone.â
âWell, she was seeing someone. But it was very secretive. Nobody but me knew about it.â
âYou, Jessica, and him,â Rosebud said, his mouth not fully empty yet.
Kate resisted the urge to elbow him. âWhoâs he?â she asked Lucy instead.
âIf I tell you, will it stay private?â
âWeâll have to look into him. He could be a suspect.â
âNo, I donât think so. Plus, heâs married. Nobody can find out.â
Rosebud cleared his throat. âPerhaps the manâs wife found out. We need to know.â
âWellââ
âLucy!â the chef yelled again from the kitchen.
âGive us a name and you can get back to work,â Kate prompted, noticing the hesitation in the brunetteâs eyes.
She exhaled deeply. âAll I know is that his first initial is A, heâs married, and heâs friends with her dad. Thatâs it. Iâm sorry I canât give you any more because I donât know anything else. Please donât smear her name. Or his.â
âThanks, Lucy,â Kate said as she finished noting things down.
A pizza box arrived just as Lucy returned to the kitchen. The waiter insisted on transferring Kateâs untouched salad to a to-go container, then they covered their mealâall of it at Kateâs insistenceâand headed to the station.
